St Peter's Prayer
Lord, we ask you to hear our prayer
for the people of St Peter's.
Give us guidance in our search for
an increase in faith, so that working
together we may achieve wisdom, vision
and understanding to help us in our
mission in pastoral care.
Grant us strong leadership in our Church,
that with love and tolerance we may grow in confidence.
May your blessing be upon us as we go
forward in the name of Christ.
Amen

Prayer
Prayer of St Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
St Peter's Church prays for every household in the Parish throughout the year.
If you have any special concerns or know of anyone who is ill and in need of prayer, please let us know. You are welcome to contact us at any time through the Church Office.
The Choir
There has been a choir at St Peter's since 1736, when a singers' gallery was erected at the West End of the church. From these early beginnings it was developed and nurtured, until under the care of Dr G P Allen (1911-1957), C K Turner (1957-1959) and Malcolm Cousins (1959-1993), it blossomed into a highly respected musical team considered worthy of being among the first in the country to be awarded Guild Status within the St Nicholas Guild of the Royal School of Church Music in 1978.
Today's choir strives to maintain the high standards of former times as it leads and beautifies the worship of the church Sunday by Sunday. The repertoire includes traditional and more recent examples of the very best of music for worship within the mainstream of the Anglican Tradition.
Rehearsals are on Friday evenings in church. For more details contact the Church.
The Organ
Re-consecrated at the end of 2000, the magnificent 3-manual organ is one of the finest in the Southwell and Nottingham Diocese. The foundation of this instrument was the organ of Clare College, Cambridge, which was purchased in 1970 together with its ornate case. It was substantially altered and enlarged by Noel Mander of London before installation in the south chapel in 1971. The original pipe work dating from the 1870's was by Gray & Davison and had been revoiced by Harrison & Harrison in 1911.
In 2000 Woods of Huddersfield replaced the worn out action with a modern micro-processor based solid system and thoroughly cleaned and overhauled the whole instrument. They also completed the 32' pedal reed which had previously been effected electronically.
There is a detailed history of the organs, compiled in 1971 by Nicholas Thistlewaite with a final chapter by John Rose, bringing the story up to date.

Flowers
Flowers enrich worship in the church as they are part of God's creation. The arranging of flowers is a regular part of the church's life and uses talents and encourages fellowship.
At St Peter's, members of the congregation help with flower arranging, either as part of the regular team or by being on the flower rota, ensuring that flowers are arranged on a weekly basis. Others also help at Easter, Pentecost, Patronal, Harvest and Christmas Festivals. Flower Festivals are held, usually every 2 years, to raise funds.
Bells
Bells have been rung for centuries at St Peter's inviting people to worship.
Bells are generally rung for Sunday services, for weddings (by arrangement)
and on other special occasions.
The oldest of the church bells is dated 1603, and the peal was made up to eight bells in 1762. Bells eventually show wear and have to be re-cast, and the last occasion on which this took place was in 1948.
House groups
House groups are held to encourage small groups of people who meet regularly, to enjoy fellowship, build friendships and to grow in their Christian faith through Bible Study.
